I have had my students try different course programs that help them to learn guitar. One good thing about the courses you can take from home is that you decide when you want to take you guitar lessons. You can also decide how many times you want to repeat a guitar lessons.

This gives you flexibility and now time is on your side and learning guitar fits into any schedule. Most of my new students learn guitar basics and are already playing songs by the end of a weekend. Learning guitar is always easer than the person thinks. People of all ages can achieve many different levels when they decide to learn how to play guitar.

Learning Guitar: Getting Started

The best and easiest path to becoming a competent guitar player is by learning some chords and then applying them to learning the rhythm parts of songs that you hear and enjoy. Guitar players often spend hours learning new chords and practicing them over and over again. Almost anyone can learn to play the guitar if they put their heart into learning, in addition to putting in a substantial amount of effort and passion. Although many prefer to take lessons, which can be very expensive, learning to playing guitar by purchasing guitar courses online is also a very realistic option.

Choosing an Acoustic Guitar

If you are looking to choose an acoustic guitar as your learning guitar then I would recommend the following:

- Taylor, moderately priced

- Dean, some good deals available

- Gibson, expensive, but you get your money’s worth in terms of quality

Acoustic guitars may be more expensive up front but then again you won’t need an amplifier. I often recommend learning acoustic first, and then moving to electric, but it doesn’t really matter what you start on and is often a matter of taste. An acoustic guitar is generally used by learners because it produces a cleaner sound and the chords crisper as a result. Some people consider it harder to play on an acoustic because you have to “push” harder, and when you take an electric guitar in your hands after that, you’ll see how it is easier.

Choosing an Electric Guitar

If you are looking to learn guitar by starting with an electric guitar I would recommend the following makes:

- Ibanez, great starters and very attractive prices

- Gibson, same as acoustic, expensive but worth it

- Fender, moderately priced, but if you don’t want to pay full price you can go with Squire

If you decide to start with an electric guitar, then you’ll want to purchase a practice amp too. You can usually pick up a reasonably high quality practice amp for around $50-$100. If you buy an electric guitar first, it will be great fun learning to do power chords and noisy solos, but when you reach certain level where you want to start using more complex chords and arrangements, it’s time to knuckle down to practice chords and progressions as if it was an acoustic. One advantage of learning guitar with an electric guitar as opposed to acoustic guitars is that you can practice silently by using headphones.

Conclusion

Learning guitar is about repetition, repetition, repetition and if you have time, repetition. Once you have those chords and scales burned into your muscle memory playing guitar is very relaxing. One major aspect of learning guitar is that of confidence and getting to that first goal and persevering is a must. Also some people find it difficult initially teaching the left hand the chords and fingering but again, this comes down to practice. When you are trying to decide which guitar techniques to try out, you will find that there are about 15 or more different techniques which can be played by the lead guitar. A few of these techniques are Staccato Notes, Tapping, Trill, Hammer-on, Vibrato, Harmonics and so on.

Before you can learn how to play these various techniques however, it may be best if you know a few facts about the different guitar techniques that you are trying to use. This information will help you to understand how you are to play, or do that particular technique.

For instance in the technique that is called a Hammer-on you don’t pick at the guitar strings. Instead you hit or hammer at the strings with your finger. This is why this technique is called a Hammer-on.

On the other hand the Vibrato guitar technique is used when you want to hold or sustain a note for a time. By using this technique you can make your playing sound more like someone is singing and it will sound less mechanical.

To play the Vibrato there are two different guitar techniques that you can try. These methods call for you to vibrate the guitar strings by bending a string in an up and down motion. The other technique for the Vibrato involves moving the hands across the guitar stings in a sideways back and forth motion.

There are about 7 different guitar techniques that you can use with rhythm guitars. These many techniques can also be used in conjunction with each other and also with the sounds that are produced by the guitar techniques of the lead guitar.

A few of these guitar techniques that you can try are one like Arpeggio Chords, Drop D tuning, Power Chords and others. These many different styles and methods of playing can all contribute towards making your playing style distinctive.

You don’t need to know all of the various guitar techniques that are available but knowing a few really great ones like the Vibrato can turn your playing into a magical experience.

If you want to do anything in life, the best way to do it is to find someone who has already done it before you, then model off of them.

Doing this increases your chances of success exponentially, and especially so when it comes to learning the guitar.

You see, if you go down the traditional road, of finding a guitar class or teacher, chances are your learning speed will be slowed dramatically…

Why you ask?

Because you can only learn at the speed at which they can teach, and often they aren’t as good as you think that they are.

You also have to ask yourself, why are they teaching you? Is it because they just enjoy teaching you how to play the guitar? Or more realistically it is because they are running a business and need to earn a living. But what does this mean to you?

It means they have a set program that they run their ‘students’ through that takes them from A to Z, and they’ve set it at that pace, so that they can extract the maximum return from you, from a monetary point of view.

Now, this might sound a little cynical, and sorry it if is, but GENERALLY, that is the truth, that is how the world works.

You CAN find those rare gems of the human race that will teach you, and do it purely because they love what they do, they either have a lot of money themselves, or don’t need the money for whatever reason.

If you can find someone like this, learn from them, because they will teach you everything that they know, at YOUR pace, not theirs… because they don’t have a hidden agenda.

Where do you find someone to model off?

Ok, there are a few ways to go about this. Obviously the best way to go about doing it is to actually find someone who is in a band that does incredibly well (the more famous the better).

This is rare to find these kinds of people, sometimes you can find someone who is retired, and is looking for a ‘protégé’, who is willing to put the time and effort if they believe in you. And if you manage to find yourself someone like this, then you better do what they say, when they say it.

You have been given an incredible opportunity.

Now, with the advent of the internet, information is king. And with that, there are lead guitarists from around the world, releasing their programs on how to play the guitar just like them.

Some of these programs really are a joke, but there are some that are absolutely incredible.

They can take you from amateur guitarist, to full on pro in an extremely short period of time. And the best part, is that you can go at your own pace, you are not limited by someone who doesn’t know how to teach you faster.

Bottom line, the courses that these high profile guitarists are releasing is probably going to be your best bet for modeling off excellence. It gets you access to their information, while still maintaining your independence, and self learning speed.
