Find Out Basic Facts in Buying a Guitar

There are a great number of guitars out there, that’s for sure. Electric, Acoustic, bass, steel, classical and acoustic-electric just to mention a few. Then besides that there are a huge number of brand names for guitars. You have Fender, Yamaha, Gibson, BC Rich just to name a few. How does one go about deciding with all these guitars to choose from.

The style of music you’re going to want to play as well as the places you’ll be playing in will definitely have an impact on the choices you make. Let’s face it, if you’re going to be playing dances, or other such gatherings with lots of people, you will most likely need a guitar that can be amplified. That pretty much eliminates acoustic.

A common thought seems to be that acoustic guitars are best suited to country, jazz and that style of music. Electric guitars it is said are deemed to be best for rock, pop, the blues and so on. So if you want to go with this train of thought, the type of music you will be playing the most will also narrow down the field for you.

If you’re interested in playing steel guitar or a bass, then you have already narrowed the field down a lot. Now you simply need to choose between brand name and model. It has been said that learning to play a bass guitar or a steel guitar will take considerably more time and effort than learning to play either acoustic or electric.

The acoustic-electric is a unique guitar. It is unique in the sense that it allows you to play both electric or acoustic on the same guitar. The switch is as simple as plugging in or unplugging the patch chord. An acoustic-electric, just as the name sounds, is an acoustic guitar with a built-in electric pick-up. There are also a wide range of manufacturers, models and price range in acoustic-electric guitars.

If you have a preferred artist, and you want to simulate their sound, then that answers a lot of the questions for you on what type of guitar you should buy. It is pretty hard to simulate the sound of an electric on an acoustic. If this is the style of music and sound you are going to be looking for the majority of the time, then that is the type of guitar you should be looking for.

Most music shops though are pretty good about showing you the different guitars, and letting you see how they feel, and hear what they sound like. For beginners, unless you’re certain you want an electric guitar, the acoustic-electric makes an excellent beginner guitar.

History of Guitars: Interesting Facts

Slash’s “Sweet Child of Mine”, Brian May of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Eric Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight” and Carlos Augusto Santana Alves’ “Maria Maria” Do you recognize all of these? These are songs popularized by some of the greatest guitarists of all time. People sang their music, danced with their rhythms, and enjoyed every performance they did with their guitars. But have you ever wondered how these guitars came into existence?

Guitars used to be ordinary instruments, those that could not meet the standards of classical music. In fact in the early 19th century, Fernando Sor has started the battle in raising the level of guitars in the music industry to the highest as possible. Soon enough, Sor seemed to have gained success in his quest.

Now, guitars have gained popularity as a choice of musical instrument. Basically, it’s a six-stringed instrument, but you can also find those with four, seven, eight, ten, eleven, twelve, and thirteen strings.
[phpbay]History of Guitars, 12, “”, “”[/phpbay]
The oldest graphical icon that perhaps represents the primary guitar features was an old carving of a Hittite bard. The Europeans have popularized this instrument in the medieval times, but it actually came from Indo-Europeans who existed 4000 years ago. Central Asians and Indian people have made guitars part of their cultural heritage, and this fact cannot be disregarded. Nevertheless, it was the European people who actually developed guitars into their finest.

Spaniards have the most influence in making the modern guitars. In reality, Romans were the first to bring in a stringed instrument called cithara in the year 40 AD. After these, Moors and Scandinavians carried with them their ouds and luts respectively. In the year 1200 AD, the four-stringed instrument oud had two types, namely Morrish guitar and Latin guitar. Latin guitars became the basis for making the modern guitar that is famous nowadays.

The lower and middle classes of society used these guitars for leisure. Then, Spain had come up with vihuela or viola de mano which became popular among Aristocrats in the 16th century.

Though the three major types of guitars are electric, classical and acoustic, many guitar variations have already come up today. Electric guitars were especially made for the growth of popular music in the United States. These guitars give a unique sound to any song, since they can be amplified and be given effects. Acoustic guitars make a soulful song with its pure tones, while classical guitars continue to embody the distinct sounds that the baroque and romantic eras once had.

In addition, the industry now has a variety of guitar brands, including Yamaha, Taylor, and Jackson, to name a few.

How To Pick a Bass Guitar

by Jackie Strohm

If you play great with a bass guitar but don’t have a bass guitar, then it’s high time that you get one. If you are thinking of buying one, picking the best choice may not be as simple as plucking some strings. There are a lot of things to cover when you make a bass guitar purchase. Luckily, this guide will aid you in finding the perfect bass guitar for your act.

The body style of the guitar should be a top consideration. Do you play in a rock band or are you a part of an acoustic triumvirate? See, if you are into rock and loud music, then go for a solid body guitar. If you play for an acoustic tune, go for hollow ones.

Once you have the body figured out, its time to check the neck. Picking the guitar with the perfect neck is easy. Just take a look at the size of your hands. The type of neck is relatively dependent on how big or small your hands are. Whether you prefer round, flat back, oval, “vee” and asymmetrical types of neck, small hands mean thinner necks and vice versa.

Anther important factor is the scale length. A bass guitar that sports short scale lengths is the best instrument for people with small hands. But you can still pick guitars that have longer scale lengths provided play them well and in tune with the other instruments of the band.

A bass guitar should also come with an extremely functional tuning machine. This little device is what you use to fine tune your instrument and hold pitch, so you are better off if you have the best one available. Also, a tuning machine with an enclosed head is much better than an open air tuning head, which is very exposed to the elements.

Do not worry much about the number of frets for when choosing a bass guitar. The number of frets is always left on your personal preference. You can choose bass guitars that have 21, 22, or 24 frets. But in the end, it does not really matter since you will be playing a lot of notes in the lower frets anyway.

The material of your guitar is also a vital attribute when picking a bass guitar. The type of wood totally affects the tone and the weight of your instrument. If you will be playing on your feet, better pick a guitar that is made of lightweight wood, such as swamp ash. Alder is also a very good choice.

In closing, you have to be very thorough with the process. But at the end of the day, pick the bass guitar that really produces the sound you want. Do not worry much about the guitars finish. It does not do anything that affects the sound.

Acoustic Guitar Lessons Online Rock

by Sid Timmons

When we think of the traditional guitar the first thing that comes to mind is the acoustic guitar. Electric guitars didn’t show up on the scene until the early 1930′s. The acoustic guitar however, has been strummed since 1779.

Countless bands and musicians have used the acoustic guitar as a staple in their repertoire. The acoustic guitar produces a sound that represents true emotion at its most raw level and all without the use of an amplifier.

Are you thinking that learning the acoustic guitar will be hard? It really isn’t. The most important thing for the beginner is picking a guitar that is well suited to their body dimensions.

Please be sure you don’t make the mistake many beginners make, and just borrow a guitar. You need to go ahead and purchase your own and get comfortable with it. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on a brand new acoustic guitar, a used one in good shape and with the right dimensions will be fine.

You can visit practically any good music store in your area and they will have a good selection of acoustic guitars that will fit the bill. Also, use online sources such as Craig’s list to search for your perfect guitar, as well as newspaper classified ads. Again make sure it is the right size for you.

After finding and buying your acoustic guitar, you will have to determine which way you will use to actually begin learning to play. Our schedules often vary wildly so pick the way that best suits your lifestyle. A few ways you can go about learning to play the acoustic guitar are:

Lessons-this is the most common and well tested way to learn the acoustic guitar. Of course you want to find a qualified guitar teacher. The benefit is that you have a coach that can work with you if you should get stuck or stop progressing. You will learn proper technique as well.

There are several disadvantages to this method. First, it can be quite costly, up to $30 for a half hour lesson. Also, you will have to physically show up for the lesson which may be on a rigid weekly schedule. Many people have a hard time fitting this type of lesson into their schedule.

Online Acoustic Guitar Lessons-In this day and age, it is really easy to learn just about anything you can think of through an online course. There are many acoustic guitar courses available, both free and paid. I recommend finding and purchasing a good course as they are more likely to be better organized.

I recommend using a paid online guitar course because most are only a small one time fee to get you started learning immediately, all from home sweet home, or anywhere you have access to a computer. Feel free to use the money you saved to grab a nicer guitar when the time is right.

I hope you found this article to be helpful and encouraging. Now it is time to take action. You won’t regret your decision.

Bass Lessons: Improve Your Technical Skills

by Orien Graham

If you have an interest in learning to play bass guitar, you will find it to be a very rewarding instrument to play. The bass guitar player is an important member of the band. The quality of the group’s playing depends largely on how well the bass player keeps in time.

However, the bass guitar is one of the most important ingredients to any band. The bass guitar is the glue, which holds the music of the band together. As such, bass guitar players are always in good demand in any band. Still, it takes several years of constant and sincere practice to become an excellent bass guitar player.

There are two ways to learn bass online. One is to take advantage of the many free bass lessons on the web. These online bass guitar lessons will help you to understand how the place of the bass guitar in a band, music theory, reading sheet music and tabs as well as giving you basic rhythms to play. Some of the bass lessons you find will have some kind of interactive component where you can play along with riffs or a backing track.

The frets are just small metal strips arranged from top to bottom. The strings and the frets form a grid type structure. If you keep your finger on a fret situated higher, the note generated would also be higher. In general, each fret is designed to produce a half-step higher note than the previous one. The headstock at the top of the bass guitar contains the four tuning pegs. The tuning pegs assist you in adjusting the pitch of the strings.

When you learn how to play bass guitar, it is advisable to use a proper guitar strap, so that the shoulders and back carry the weight of the bass. This gives the hands very free movement. Keep the bass base near the belly button and keep your back straight. Hold the neck of the bass gently, with the thumb resting without pressure behind the neck.

As a bass player you must learn to play in time. A newbie guitar player can spend years playing guitar with the tempo and timing all over the place because he does not have to play with other musicians. The bass guitarist’s job is to play in a band so the sooner you get any little rhythmic or timing peccadillo’s ironed out, the better.

Plucking is the action done at the bottom of the strings to create the sound. While using a metal pick to pluck the strings is easy work, plucking them with the fingers is normally considered ideal. The thump should be just outside the strings, while the index finger should roll over the top portion of the E string and pull the string towards your body before you let go. This plucking becomes perfect only after constant practice. The middle finger should be used for plucking the A string.

This is another fantastic option when it comes to getting to learn bass online. They offer lots of information in their lessons, through which you will learn how to tune your guitar by ear so that this eventually becomes second in nature, all finger positions and techniques for different songs, a video of an expert playing each song, and you can even listen to how the whole track should sound or hear it note by note so that you can compare your playing and make sure that you are getting it just right.

Guitar Lessons: Improve Your Technical Skills

by Robert Fanene

Would you like to be able to play the guitar really well? If your answer to this question is yes, then you must acknowledge the need to take guitar lessons. There are quite a few good reasons why you should consider taking guitar lessons, the most obvious of which is to improve your skills and make progress.

Over time, learning the guitar using this traditional method of instruction can cost you thousands of dollars per year (Even at the low end of the price range, $25/hour for 2-hours/week for 50-weeks in a year – 2 weeks left out for vacation – your total cost for one year of lessons would be $2,500; even if you did only 1-hour/week, the cost would still be expensive at $1,250 for the year…and, again, that’s using the low-end of the price range).

With so many guitar lessons out there (both free and paid), the task of finding the best ones (and more important, the ones that are most appropriate to you) can be very difficult. The best approach to this problem is to do a quick research on the specialized online resources with a good reputation and choose the websites that provide the guitar lessons which best suit your needs and requirements.

If playing the guitar is something you love, you will probably feel the need to make some progress and become even better with the guitar. This is an achievable goal, provided you are able to set some definite tasks and goals, and measure your progress. The most efficient way to achieve all this is to take guitar lessons. They will give structure and focus to your learning, and help you make progress faster. Learning a little here and there may lead to some progress, but it will most likely be slow and scattered. When learning how to play the guitar is what you really wish for, guitar lessons are your best option.

By choosing to use only the lessons and tips of the major, highly reputed online guitar lesson-providing websites, you will ensure that you will be able to learn to play the guitar in an exciting, efficient and simple manner and that your efforts of learning how to play the guitar will pay off in the least of time. Especially if you are a complete novice at playing the guitar (and are not yet capable of evaluating the quality and efficiency of online guitar lessons you may come across), it is very important to stick with the ones offered by the best guitar learning online resources. By doing this, you will avoid wasting time and money with guitar lessons that don’t produce the expected results.

Once you have found the online guitar lesson-providing websites that are right for you, all you have to do is choose the lessons, tips and guitar-playing video tutorials that match your levels of skill and experience and start practicing in order to improve your playing. In case you are a beginner, it is also recommendable for you to decide over what you are interested in learning first or what guitar techniques you wish to master. For instance, if you want to become a pro at playing electric guitar, using acoustic guitar lessons would in most cases be a waste of time, considering that the guitar techniques used for playing the electric guitar are very different from those used to play the acoustic guitar.

No more wasting money because you can’t seem to grasp a skill and you have to continue to ask your instructor during multiple lessons to spend time showing you how it is to be performed. With these “digital” or “online” guitar programs, you can get experienced instruction on whatever skill you need as many times as you need it and it does not cost you any more money! Most, if not all of these courses, offer continued online support for FREE after you purchase their program. What guitar instructor who offers in-person lessons would give you their phone number or even their email address so that you could ask them questions anytime you needed some support?

Playing the guitar is something wonderful that many people wish they were able to do. If learning how to play the guitar is what you have always wanted, don’t waste another second. Guitar lessons DVDs are available online at very affordable prices.

Guitar lessons come in all shapes and sizes, so how do you know which ones are going to be best for you?

An obvious starting point is to look at the type of music you like to be able to play. It gives you a basic starting point to work from and is also a good indicator of how much work lies ahead of you! Certain styles of music such as Classical Guitar for example require a structured and regulated approach and private guitar lessons are advised.

Certain styles of playing allow you a lot of freedom with the road you take for technique and structure. For some styles such as Rock theres really no structure for how you learn to play guitar at all. For some people it’s perfect while others will feel lost. It’s up to you to recognize how best you learn and obey that aspect of yourself. What all musicians are trying to do is connect with themselves.
