Another Mini Guitar Lesson – How To Play Hammer On's And Pull Off's

In this article we are going to learn how to play hammer on’s and pull off’s.

In the last article/mini guitar lesson you learned how to move the pentatonic pattern 1 around the neck. In this lesson we will expand on that to bring a technique called the “hammer on”.

For example let’s take pattern 1 at the 5th fret (Am).

A “hammer on” is played by holding down the 6th string at the 5th fret and proceed to pick it. Now hit your 4th finger hard down onto the 8th fret hard enough to make the string hit the fret and sound out as loud as if you’d picked it!

You need to practice playing this on all the strings in the scale pattern… and it is known as “hammering on”!!!

Once you are able to play the “hammer on” quickly you will build up your speed over time and find that you will be able to play notes quickly without having to pick the strings individually. This will speed up your overall playing ability…

Try to practice your guitar playing EVERY day, even if you only pick it up for a few minutes, your fingers will become more and more on auto pilot…

To add to the “hammer on” we will now have a go at a technique called the “pull off” and is the next killer technique you must try to master on your road to becoming a great player!

We will start off again using pentatonic pattern one at the 5th fret (Am). Hold down the 8th fret with your 4th finger and also the 5th fret with your first finger on the 6th string.

Now pick the string sounding the note at the 8th fret (C)

Now here’s the clever bit : whilst the note is still ringing flick the string with your 4th finger (pull off) to sound the note at the 5th fret (A). Do not use your pick at all!

Make sure you practice this on all the strings up and down pattern 1.

These great and widely used techniques (hammer on’s and pull off’s) is a regular feature in fantastic sounding solos.

Practice until your fingers bleed! Only joking!!!!

Two Mini Guitar Lessons To Help Stop Your Guitar Solo's From Sounding Mediocre!

Hi Mike here from Killer Guitar Tips.

I am now going to show you a couple of mini guitar lessons in this article that you really should know to help get your guitar soloing of to a great start and stop you from sounding shall we say mediocre!

OK, let’s get into it…

This weeks mini guitar lesson is on how to use the Pentatonic Pattern #1 scale for major and minor solo’s.

The first thing we need to understand is that every pentatonic pattern can be used for major and minor scales.

The following are known as relative major and minors. That is, pattern #1 at the fifth fret produces two keys, A minor (Am) and C major (C).

As we can see, this pattern can now be used for BOTH these keys, Am and C major. So, to get a real cool, bluesy rock sound we can simply play Am over a track writtem in A major!

Now here’s the really cool part…

Keeping with this pattern, move the whole pattern down the neck towards the tuning pegs by just 3 frets. Now, when we play this same pattern here we will now be playing in A major that produces a very melodic, tuneful soloing sound!!!

The next little trick continues the theme of moving pentatonic pattern 1 around the neck to create killer solos.

In the key of A, play pentatonic pattern #1 at the 5th fret (Am) you will create a great bluesy rock solo.

Now here is a great little tip… Move the whole shape up the guitar neck by 7 to Em and continue playing! This will produce a great melodic sound using exactly the same pattern but played at a different part of the neck, try it, it’s a mainstay in the guitarists bag of tricks.

If you make a place on your hard drive and create a folder for all the little mini guitar lessons I will be giving you over the coming weeks and practice them regularly you will build up an awesome bag of tricks that when put together in a solo will produce a killer sound. Your friends will be amazed at your skill!

All these mini guitar lessons i will be giving you are just a very small fraction of material contained in the Killer Guitar Tips home study course but even so are invaluable in your journey to be come a great player.

So You Want to Play Guitar Songs? – Take a Look at This!

by Ryse Edwards

There are two important things you should do prior to attempting to play guitar songs. Firstly, you should make sure your guitar is tuned properly as the song you are trying to play will not sound good if its not. Secondly, you will need a basic knowledge of know how to read guitar tabs.

Once you have tuned in your guitar and know how to read guitar tabs, you will need to train your ear when listening to a song in order to be able to play guitar songs. Listen to simple songs to begin with, preferably those songs consisting of three simple chords.
[phpbay]Guitar Song, 12, “”, “”[/phpbay]
Whilst listening to the song, pay particular attention to the rhythm and the timing of the chords and strums you hear being played on the guitar. When you have listened to a song a few times, have a go at following along with the song by reading the guitar tab at the same time as the song is being played. Do this a few times and as you do, make a mental note of the rhythm and timing you hear.

When you have heard the song a few times and followed along on the guitar tab, it is time to take up your own guitar and strum along with the song as it is playing. Remember to play your guitar softly so you can still hear the music you are trying to copy in the background.

As you begin to pick up the timing and strumming style, you can start to play the song on your own without the assistance of the music. Don’t worry if you forget the song because you can easily listen to it again if you need to. The songs you practice on your guitar should be played over and over again, one at a time, until you are able to sing along with the song as you play. It will help you if you master one song before moving on to the next.

It’s a great idea to record yourself playing if you can. This affords you the luxury of being able to watch the playback of your performance and correct any mistakes you are making in your technique.

Discovering how to play guitar songs is not as difficult as you may first think. All you need is passion and patience. If it takes a while and you make many errors, don’t worry about it too much as this will only lead to you making more mistakes. If you just can’t seem to get it right and become frustrated put down the guitar for a while and go off and do something else. But remember to pick up your guitar later on and get back to practicing how to play guitar songs until you get it just right.

Acoustic Guitar Lessons Online Rock

by Sid Timmons

When we think of the traditional guitar the first thing that comes to mind is the acoustic guitar. Electric guitars didn’t show up on the scene until the early 1930′s. The acoustic guitar however, has been strummed since 1779.

Countless bands and musicians have used the acoustic guitar as a staple in their repertoire. The acoustic guitar produces a sound that represents true emotion at its most raw level and all without the use of an amplifier.

Are you thinking that learning the acoustic guitar will be hard? It really isn’t. The most important thing for the beginner is picking a guitar that is well suited to their body dimensions.

Please be sure you don’t make the mistake many beginners make, and just borrow a guitar. You need to go ahead and purchase your own and get comfortable with it. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on a brand new acoustic guitar, a used one in good shape and with the right dimensions will be fine.

You can visit practically any good music store in your area and they will have a good selection of acoustic guitars that will fit the bill. Also, use online sources such as Craig’s list to search for your perfect guitar, as well as newspaper classified ads. Again make sure it is the right size for you.

After finding and buying your acoustic guitar, you will have to determine which way you will use to actually begin learning to play. Our schedules often vary wildly so pick the way that best suits your lifestyle. A few ways you can go about learning to play the acoustic guitar are:

Lessons-this is the most common and well tested way to learn the acoustic guitar. Of course you want to find a qualified guitar teacher. The benefit is that you have a coach that can work with you if you should get stuck or stop progressing. You will learn proper technique as well.

There are several disadvantages to this method. First, it can be quite costly, up to $30 for a half hour lesson. Also, you will have to physically show up for the lesson which may be on a rigid weekly schedule. Many people have a hard time fitting this type of lesson into their schedule.

Online Acoustic Guitar Lessons-In this day and age, it is really easy to learn just about anything you can think of through an online course. There are many acoustic guitar courses available, both free and paid. I recommend finding and purchasing a good course as they are more likely to be better organized.

I recommend using a paid online guitar course because most are only a small one time fee to get you started learning immediately, all from home sweet home, or anywhere you have access to a computer. Feel free to use the money you saved to grab a nicer guitar when the time is right.

I hope you found this article to be helpful and encouraging. Now it is time to take action. You won’t regret your decision.

The Cult Of The Fender Strat Guitar

by Andrew Nelly

Throughout the history of guitars, since it’s birth as an instrument, there have been several models and types that have made an impact. Not only just because of the way that the guitar has been built or that they feature the recent and most innovative designs and materials, but that they have been strummed by the best guitarists of all time.

Most likely, the most infamous guitar would be the Fender Stratocaster. First made by its creator, Leo Fender, founder of the world leading Fender Guitar company back in the 50s, the Stratocaster or Fender Strat as it is more commonly known, has taken it’s place amongst the history of music and rock and roll. Now enjoying a cult of followers from newbie guitar players and vintage guitar lovers alike, the Strat still empowers the best of todays musical groups.

The 1957 model of the Fender Stratocaster is probably considered to be the best and most collectable of the near 60 year run classic design. The 57 model features the famous 2 tone sun burst design, usually red and orange or yellow fading to black and can be seen being used by guitar greats such as Jimi Hendrix, Metallica and Led Zeppelin during the recent years. After it’s inception all those years ago, the Strat was primarily used for playing blues style music until the likes of Jimi Hendrix blasted it into another world and started pushing the guitar and music to it’s limits and crashing into a new era. Jimi was one of many who was able to combine their talents with the Fender technicians and the team behind the Fender Custom Factory to make his own white signature model of Fender Strat. Leo Fender was famous for encouraging the worlds best guitarists to work along side them to not only design their own personally designed named models, but also re-evolve their existing designs through experimentation and customization.

The Fender Stratocaster has been used on a wide variety of different musical styles over the years from blues to thrash and jazz. It’s clean, clear sound lets the guitar player have the freedom to make any style and type of music accessible and the perfect build quality of each guitar is second to none. The main body of the strat is made from alder wood and the kneck is made from maple with a rosewood fretboard. The guitar includes a set of three single coil pickups which assists the generation of the the clean sound. There is a five way selector switch that allows you to switch between different combinations of the 3 pickups to produce very different tones and a series of volume and tone knobs.

The Strat is certainly one of the guitars that will go down in the annuls of time as being an almost perfect and extremely versatile instrument that had a hand in helping change the face of rock and roll and music made by guitars as we know it today. I am sure that Leo Fender was unaware that that when he first made the Strat in 1950, he would also be creating a cult and a legacy that will span well over 100 years.
