Acoustic Guitar Lessons Online Rock

by Sid Timmons

When we think of the traditional guitar the first thing that comes to mind is the acoustic guitar. Electric guitars didn’t show up on the scene until the early 1930′s. The acoustic guitar however, has been strummed since 1779.

Countless bands and musicians have used the acoustic guitar as a staple in their repertoire. The acoustic guitar produces a sound that represents true emotion at its most raw level and all without the use of an amplifier.

Are you thinking that learning the acoustic guitar will be hard? It really isn’t. The most important thing for the beginner is picking a guitar that is well suited to their body dimensions.

Please be sure you don’t make the mistake many beginners make, and just borrow a guitar. You need to go ahead and purchase your own and get comfortable with it. This doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune on a brand new acoustic guitar, a used one in good shape and with the right dimensions will be fine.

You can visit practically any good music store in your area and they will have a good selection of acoustic guitars that will fit the bill. Also, use online sources such as Craig’s list to search for your perfect guitar, as well as newspaper classified ads. Again make sure it is the right size for you.

After finding and buying your acoustic guitar, you will have to determine which way you will use to actually begin learning to play. Our schedules often vary wildly so pick the way that best suits your lifestyle. A few ways you can go about learning to play the acoustic guitar are:

Lessons-this is the most common and well tested way to learn the acoustic guitar. Of course you want to find a qualified guitar teacher. The benefit is that you have a coach that can work with you if you should get stuck or stop progressing. You will learn proper technique as well.

There are several disadvantages to this method. First, it can be quite costly, up to $30 for a half hour lesson. Also, you will have to physically show up for the lesson which may be on a rigid weekly schedule. Many people have a hard time fitting this type of lesson into their schedule.

Online Acoustic Guitar Lessons-In this day and age, it is really easy to learn just about anything you can think of through an online course. There are many acoustic guitar courses available, both free and paid. I recommend finding and purchasing a good course as they are more likely to be better organized.

I recommend using a paid online guitar course because most are only a small one time fee to get you started learning immediately, all from home sweet home, or anywhere you have access to a computer. Feel free to use the money you saved to grab a nicer guitar when the time is right.

I hope you found this article to be helpful and encouraging. Now it is time to take action. You won’t regret your decision.

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Guitar – as Good as it Gets!

by Mark McPherson

Whether to buy the Epiphone Les Paul guitar or not is a favourite topic to be discussed by people who like to play a guitar as well as other music lovers. Guitars such as the Epiphone Les Paul are affordable but not cheap; you get an inexpensively priced quality guitar.

The history of the Epiphone Les Paul guitar goes way back in the late 1800′s when Anastasios Stathopoulos from Turkey mastered his ability in creating string instruments. When his family migrated to the United States in the early 1900′s, he put his skills to good use.

Anastasios Stathopoulos, a Turkish instrument maker in the 19th century, mastered the art of making string instruments. When he migrated to the United States in 1903 along with his family, he started a company which became successful because it was at this time that Americans developed a fascination for the banjo.

The great response from their customers prompted the company to venture out to guitar-making. The name Epiphone was actually taken after Anastasios’ son, Epamimondas, in 1928. However, after a few decades of operation, the company was bought by Gibson in the late 1950s.

In the early 1950s, Gibson introduced the Les Paul electric guitar, named after the popular guitarist Les Paul who also invented his own solid body for the guitar. Gibson designed a different version of the guitar while still incorporating suggestions from Les Paul and using him as the endorser for the new product.

Today, the Epiphone Les Paul guitars are actually the inexpensive version of the original Gibson guitar. These guitars are created in Korea where labour cost is low and the materials are cheap which is basically why the Epiphone is not expensive like the standard Les Paul guitar.

Fond guitar users would usually heat up the Yes and No sides as to the argument of how good the Epiphone model is compared to the original Gibson creation. The critics would say that the tone emanating from the Epiphone models will not level up to the quality produced by the original.

Moreover, they added that the structure of the Epiphone’s neck also makes it difficult for the user to hold. Some would further say that due to the cheap materials used, the model really is inferior to the original Gibson guitars.

In its defence, satisfied users would say that the Epiphone model performs well. It weighs lighter but it sounds perfect like the original. This is because the Epiphone model is also made of more mahogany pieces to produce the same sound like that of the Gibson model. The pickups for the two models are even similar. Even if the machine head for the Epiphone is bouncy, it aids well in making the guitar tune out well.

Users of the Epiphone guitar have not complained about it and they say the pickups are the same as the Gibson standard, and although the heads tend to move more than the standard, this helps to keep it tuned. If you take a good look at both the Epiphone and the standard Les Paul guitar, you will find no difference at all!

Gibson Flying V Guitar

by Daniel Anderson

When you think of rock music, heavy guitars and power chords you can almost picture the infamous Flying V guitar in your mind. Slung low over the shoulder of the lead guitarist with his head down, long hair moshing to the beat.

The Gibson Flying V is certainly one of the rock guitars that will go down in history as being one of the most unique designs ever. Originally built and launched by the guitar company back in 1958 and then relaunched in 1967, the mahogany bodied flying V took the world of rock by storm.

Although Gibson still make and sell the Flying V today under the name of the Tribal V (complete with tattoo patterns) it is the older and more famous models that are highly collectible. The older models, made in the 50′s are referred to as the V Factor, but the guitars made in the late 60′s are the most sought after.

The Flying V has been played by so many different people, all over the world that it is hard to pick any one person out to consider the ambassador of the model. Perhaps Jimi Hendrix who worked closely with Gibson to create his own Paisley Flying V signature model is a good example of the level of musicians that played the V.

If you were to go out and buy a brand new model today, the Tribal V would be the one to look for. Gibson have only manufactured this as a limited edition run of 350 units, so finding one may be difficult. Not impossible though if you check out good local shops and places like eBay. If you want the real deal, you will be looking for the older models from the late 1960s and early 1970s, when the V was at the height of its popularity.

The Gibson Tribal V is a newer, more up to date version of the older model with all new components and electronics. The modern, youth tribal tattoo markings and graphics make it stand out from the crowd too.

Even Ibanez was so taken with the guitar that they tried to release their own version too, but came up against the might of the Gibson lawyers and had to change their plans. In later years, other manufacturers were allowed to copy the design though and make their own versions.

The Flying V certainly has made its mark on the ethos and mythology of rock music and guitar based rock. Its image is immediately recognizable and the Gibson quality, design and perfection make the guitar one of the best rock guitars ever.

Choosing Pickups For Your Favorite Electric Guitar

by Kyle Zoltowski

The harmonious and vibrant sound of electric guitars was the pinnacle of rock and roll. During the 1950′s, this inclusion of the electric guitar was being tried and then in the 60′s and 1970′s, that sound was made better until it lead the way to the most popular music of all time. The amazing sound that comes from an electric guitar is amazing. It is amazing to imagine where music would be today if it hadn’t been for the creation of the electric guitar; horrible to think of. A band without an electric guitar is like a child without its parents.

Electric guitars come in several different shapes, sizes, colors, and designs. Some think that it does not matter what electric guitar that is used because they all are the same thing. This is simply not true; brand, size, pickups, and neck all make a difference in the sound that spews from the guitar. Because of this, certain brands of electric guitars remained popular for decades because of the precision that is put into making them. However, the biggest contributor to the sound produced is the pickups.

Whether starting the next great rockband, jamming solo, or adding instruments to your band’s arsenal, you should be aware of the different types of pickups used in electric guitars prior to your purchase. Many stores will let you you testing them and can be very helpful in providing information and assisting one in choosing the perfect electric guitar. Make sure to get an explanation about the various pickup arrangements. Thestyles of pickups for electric guitars are:

* Single Coil Pickups – This type of pickup has a single coil. Single coil pickups are the oldest of electric guitar pickups. When strumming on single coil pickup, the sound is compromised by other frequencies in the area which make a humming sound. These types of pickups are not often seen today but are the choice of a few very well known rockers because of the blues-like sound they produce.

* Humbucker Pickups – This pickup has two coils wherein the unwanted hum of the single coil pickup is eliminated. Essentially, the coil carries two signals: one that the guitar is letting out and one that kills the humming noise. The actual piece that does this is called a Humbucker which was patented in 1954. The humbucker is basically the arrangement of two coils.

* Double Coil Pickups – This type in pickups, like the name, consist of two coils. But, for an unknown reason, musicians do enjoy the hum sound once in a while so the double coil pickup electric guitars sometimes come with a switch that can cancel the second coil.

There are many other factors that go into the sound an electric guitar produces. However, pickups are the sound makers. Other things for example: neck length, shape, material, frets, and tuners also play a part but not like the pickups. For decades, pioneers have been trying new things in hopes to finding the perfect guitar to make the best sound. Rock and roll has changed in some ways but in other ways it has stayed the same.
