by Payo W Perry

Making the decision to learn electric guitar is a source of excitement. An entire world or sonic colour, passion and musical bliss opens its doors! Often its some kind of inspiration such a great rock solo you’ve heard or simply life telling you go here, that makes you want to take it up.

It’s going to help a lot if you’ve already had some experience playing chords and strumming on acoustic guitar. Usually starting with acoustic guitar is the cheapest and safest option because it allows you to see if you are really going to take to the instrument or not.

An important decision is what style of guitar will be your main interest? What is the style you’re most excited about and feel the most motivation to learn? It’s important as learning electric guitar is a very different experience depending on what you want to learn. Someone taking electric guitar lessons for Jazz, for example, is going to be a world apart from another learning Metal right?

There’s no real hard and fast rule for how to learn electric guitar correctly. That’s why its so cool and accessible to everyone. For the fastest results my advice would be to use a combination of lessons with a local tutor and teaching yourself online. There are many resources for how to play electric guitar so take advantage of them all in combination.

As a final thought please avoid jumping into the deep end and trying to learn things which are currently beyond your ability. You have to build up your technique gradually over time and this requires some patience, common sense and restraint. Its really for the best since to kill yourself trying to play something way beyond your technical level as a beginner is a one way street to frustration and failure. You’ve been warned!

To learn electric guitar successfully do a little bit of practice each day, use all the resources available to you with private tuition and the web, stay within your level and you’ll avoid most of the major pitfalls! Learn Guitar On DVD

by Payo W Perry

Many people consider learning guitar on DVD to be a more convenient solution than attending private lessons with a local guitar tutor. The main advantages seem to be that you can practice and learn when it suits your schedule as well as being a more economical way to learn.

The only word of advice I would give is that you have be motivated to really want to learn through this medium. Even though you can see and hear the instruction on screen you are still essentially teaching yourself. Some people are better at doing this than others.

Each student is different and often comes with unique problems and ability to learn the instrument. A guitar instruction DVD is not able to compensate for this and you consequently you may find times when it doesnt succeed in teaching you effectively.

In my opinion the best value can be taken from guitar lessons on DVD when you are not a total beginner but have a little bit of playing knowledge already. This comes back to the fact that you are essentially still teaching yourself when you use a DVD and having some playing experience gives you a distinct advantage here.

Finally when looking for a DVD try to get one suitable for your playing level on guitar, theres no point in trying to learn things which are technically too difficult. It can be hard to tell at times as there are no sample lessons to try before you buy with guitar DVDs try to do your best to judge whats going to be suitable for you.

Recently, guitar lessons on DVD have come under increased pressure from learning guitar online. Many people now see online guitar lessons as a cheaper and a more immediate way to learn guitar. Its also often the case that you can try taster lessons online which are not possible with guitar instruction DVDs.
